1. THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL IN NORTH CAROLINA/TENNESSEE
While any section of this 2,190-mile route is incredible, the Roan Highlands section along the North Carolina-Tennessee state line is an underrated stretch of this epic long-distance path. The 19.3-mile segment from Carver’s Gap to Hump Mountain is considered by many to be one of the most scenic sections of the AT, resembling the treeless Scottish Highlands. You’ll hike through tunnels of rhododendrons before reaching sweeping views of the entire region, offering endless panoramas of the bald peaks in the distance. Gaining 4,760 feet along the way, this route is considered a moderate hike, so plan for taking two or three days to get from point-to-point.
